By 1945, Japan had no fleet carriers left. Defensive rings were collapsing all across the Pacific, and the high command looked to the shores of Japan itself. Fujieda Naval Air Station was opened in 1944 close to the shore and within sight of Mt. Fuji. Here, and elsewhere along the coast, Japan began collecting the remnant of its air forces and preparing to resist the coming invasion at all costs.
