Mitsubishi first developed the Galant VR-4 to compete in World Rally Championship races, beginning in the late 1980s. By 1992, the VR-4 had three event wins and three championships under its belt. Despite its impressive performance, the sport's demand for smaller cars forced Mitsubishi to replace the VR-4 with the more compact Lancer Evolution.
