After the war on the western front descended into stalemate, the British Army neded a way of breaking through enemy lines and opening gaps for the infantry. The first production of Mk.I made it to the front lines and acquired the name "Tank" as a security measure to hide its true purpose. It had however, a short operational life before being replaced by Mk.IVs.
