Once the Panzer V or "Panther" was introduced to WWII, it quickly became apparent that none of the German recovery vehicles of the time could shift their massive bulks off the field after a breakdown. To address this issue, German forces took multiple Panther chassis and attached a heavy-duty crane to them. These turret-less Panthers were then able to haul broken down tanks back to repair depots.
